WIDE IMPRESSION ON A SMALL FOOTPRINT
It all started when we started to look for a solution to balance the footprint of a smartphone with the amount of information it can display.
SHOULD IT FOLD? SHOULD IT OPEN?
Soon it became apparent that some mechanisms can enable more information to be displayed within a smaller footprint. However, these type of solutions are fiddly and does not present the interface immediately and requires extra effort.
MULTITASKING IN STACKS
The idea came through in presenting every app in stacks that run at the same time. The need to access multiple apps at the same time can be realized by seamless representation of apps as cards.
A CINEMATIC VIEW
The solution was an ultra-wide screen that can comfortably present two apps at once. More accurately, one and a quarter apps. This enables visually referencing an app while using another or any drag-drop operation from one to the other.
PREVIEWING THROUGH BLINDS
The ultra-wide screen enabled a few interactions such as a blind-like apps preview that gives an overview of four running apps that can interact with each other.
FAR AND WIDE
As a result, I have created the UX concept and made an example ID to demonstrate what a possible hardware might look and feel like.
A PLATFORM FOR THE FUTURE
The UX video above was created in late 2011 as a part of the concept project MMD. It shows a couple of examples of drag-drop and multi-tasking possibilities. Enjoy.
